Awesome Andy

From the bunker report from 27 July 2019

Saturday 27 July 2019 will always be a day Millicent Golf Club Member Andy Varcoe remembers as he had a hole in one on the par 3 Third which was around a 145 meter shot just to even reach the green. Andy’s hole in was even more remarkable due to the fact this was his fourth Hole in one on the Course and it means he has now had a hole in one on each of the four Par Three’s at the Millicent Course. Andy’s First hole in one come back in 2008 with a ace on the tricky 13th then in 2017 he actually had two, one on the 5th and one on the long and uncompressing 17th. Records will need to be checked during the week to see if anyone else at the club has got hole in one’s on all par three’s at the Millicent Golf Club since records started to be kept. Andy’s playing partners enjoyed the shot just as much as Andy did and they also enjoyed the refreshments afterwards as well. Well done to Andy you have achieved something some golfers will never do and to have done this four times on tricky par three’s is simply remarkable.

Now let’s focus on the other not so flukey golfers. 25 members took cards out in the Saturday Stableford event with the winner of the A Grade being Owen Merrett with a superb 41 points from the hole in one expert Andy Varcoe on 37 points. Club Captain Trevor Atkinson claimed the B Grade honors with a good round of 38 points from club life member in Graham “Arch” Sunderland on 36 points. The ball rundown winners were Martin Cameron on 37 points, Glen Tilley on 36 points and local Business Owner Mark Pilmore on 35 points. Nearest to pin winners Andrew Varcoe for a sensation ace on the Third, Martin Cameron on the Fifth, Trevor Atkinson on 13th and Alan Schultz used all his might to claim the 17th. Trevor Atkinson claimed the only birdie for the day and that was on the 13th.

Thursday’s Stableford round was played in very pleasant conditions and 21 players took cards out but it was Dave Seymour claimed the honors with 37 stableford points winning on a countback from Matt Warren also on 37 points, Andrew Ferguson snuck in to fill third placing on 36points. Scott Packer claimed nearest to pin on the fifth. Matt Warren, Viv Bennison, Phil Hunter, Brian Duldig all birdies as well.

Don’t forget we have Stock agents and Farmers day on tomorrow commencing at around 10.00am and if your not doing anything the club would be happy to get some volunteers out there. Millicent Open is on August 25 as well.

Great Work Gianni

With the Champions being crowned from the Club and Grade champs it was Club golf back in action again. Thursday’ stableford comp attracted a excellent field of 24 players, which was played in fine conditions. The eventual winner of the competition was Alan Schultz on 42 points from Mike McRostie on 39 points and Doug Robbins on 38. Alan Schultz also won the best score on the front nine with 23 points. It was good to see fisherman Jamie Hale back out at the club and he won the nearest to the pin on the fifth. Mike McRostie and Jamie Allen had birdies on the 13th as well.

Saturday’s Monthly Medal round was played in very pleasant conditions with some members even choosing to wear the shorts and T-Shirt they must have their seasons mixed up. 35 Players took cards out in this competition with two ladies taking part of the Saturday Ladies Stableford. The Monthly medalist for July was new member Gianni Giuranstante who with a superb net 67. I am sure this is Gianni’s first time he has won a competition since taking out membership at the Millicent Golf Club, well done Gianni keep the good work up. This score was more then enough to clinch the B Grade best score as well with Peter Burchard getting second with a net 73. The A Grade comp was hotly contested with Owen Merrett taking it out with a net 73 from Alan Schultz with a net 74. The Ball rundown was won by Geoff Cameron net 74, Scott Lonergan net 74 and Paul Whitford net 75. The nearest to pin on the 3rd was collected by Greg Cook, Terry Chant claimed the fifth, Andy Varcoe fired in a arrow on the 13th to claim it and Martin Cameron took out the 17 with an impressive shot. Birdies went the way of Andy Varcoe on the 3rd and 13th, Alan Schultz, Greg Cook and Geoff Cameron all having birdies on the fifth. The clubs most infamous putter in Mark Pilmore had a great day with the flat stick to take out the putting comp with 26 putts. If anyone see’s Brian Duldig can you, please put the coordinates to the Golf Club in his car’s GPS as he might have trouble finding his way-out next time he plays. Next Saturday’s competition is a Stableford and we have the Stock Agents/Farmers day on August 2nd, 2019 and volunteers are needed for this event.

CHANT THE CHAMP

Thursdays stableford round had 22 members take cards out but it was Doug Robbins who won the day with 38 points from Owen Merrett on 34 points and then Terry Chant coming in third on 33pts. Doug Robbins also won the front nine with a very good 20 points . Terry Chant took out the nearest to pin on the fifth which he also birded.

Saturday’s stroke round was cancelled due to the inclement weather which last for most of the morning and all afternoon. It still didn’t stop at least 16 hearty members going out to the club and attempting to play through these conditions. 7 players in the morning could only complete nine holes before the conditions go the better of them and 9 players in the afternoon commenced rounds but also didn’t complete them.

Sunday was the final of the Club and Grade championships which was played in pretty good weather. The Club Championship and B Grade was played over 36 Holes whilst the C Grade match was played over 18 holes. This is what all golfers play all year for and it really is a special thing to even win one Club or Grade Championship and a honor to even contest one of these finals as well. All Matches were played in good spirits between competitors and the quality of the golf was exceptional for Club Amateur Golf. The Club Championship was contested between Terry Chant who is a previous multiple club champ taking on Ben Golding who has made the final in the champs previously. On this occasion it was Terry Chant winning five and four over a gallant Ben Golding who tried very hard to get back into the match after Chant had a 7-hole lead, both players played very good golf all day but it was Chant who took the early running and never look back clinching his fifth Club Championship. Scott Packer and Martin Cameron played of for the B Grade title, this was Cameron’s third time he has made a Grade final and Scott Packer was shooting for his fourth B Grade title. The quality of golf on display in this match was first class but it was Cameron coming back from a a early deficit to win his first Grade Title. Cameron played some quality golf in the afternoon session winning over Packer 7 and 6, Packer never gave up, but he was just getting out played in the afternoon’s session of golf. Scott Lonergan and Dave Seymour contested the C Grade final and Scott Lonergan was hoping to defend his title and make it back to back titles and Seymour was hoping to seek revenge for his lose in this final last year. This match was closet all day and the match wasn’t decided until the very last put of the day but it was Lonergan coming up trumps one up over the veteran Seymour. Many thanks must go to Captain Trevor Atkinson for organizing this championships, Bruce Packer for doing the bar for each week of the Championships, the caddies of the players who done a great job looking after their players and the spectators that came out to watch, the atmosphere in the clubhouse after was exceptional. Congrats to all players that played on Sunday.
