Saturday’s competition was a stableford round with 32 men and two women taking our cards in what was played fine but at times very cold conditions. The course is in excellent condition at the moment with the greens rolling quite quick and very true as well. Viv Bennison continued his white-hot form to take out the A Grade with 35 points from Dual Club Champion in Andrew Varcoe on 34 points. Chris Agnew won the B Grade with a best score of the day 36 points from Peter Burchard also on 36 points. The ball rundown went the way of Herman Vanderheul on 36 points who was desperately unlucky not to get a mention in the B Grade losing in a three way count back, Graham Sunderland on 34 points and club captain Trevor Atkinson also on 34 points. Greg Cook won the nearest to Pin on the Third, Portland Visitor A Lindsay won the fifth Peter Burchard took out the 13th and another Portland visitor P Marnell won the 17th. Viv Bennison was the only golfer to have a birdie on the par 3’s and he took the entire birdie prize pool. Kathy Sporer won the ladies comp with 28 points well done to the ladies who faced the cold conditions.
Sunday was the semi finals for the Club Championship and Grade Championship for 2019. In the A Grade Ben Golding defeated a gallant Greg Cook 4 and 3, Terry Chant defeated the ever-consistent Ian Greenwood 1 up. Ben Golding will now play Terry Chant in the final for the a grade and Club Championship and this is not the first time they have played off against each other, on that occasion it was Terry Chant winning it from Ben. In the B Grade it was Martin Cameron winning 3 and 2 against previous B Grade Club Champion Andrew Ferguson. Multiple B Grade Champion Scott Packer had to play the 19th to secure the win over Veteran Graham Warren. Scott Packer and Martin Cameron will face off in the B Grade final and Scott Packer will be trying to win his fourth title in this Grade. Martin Cameron will be hoping its second time lucky this time around. In the C Grade Dave Seymour won five and four against retired schoolteacher and part time Master of Ceremonies Glen Tilley. Scott Lonergan won on the 20th hole against improving Junior Liam Chant. Scott Lonergan and Dave Seymour will play off in the C Grade final and this final is the same as last year’s final with Scott winning his maiden Grade Championship at the Golf Club Dave will be hoping for a different result this time around. Finals start on Sunday from 9am which will be contested over 36 holes with the C Grade commencing at 11 am over 18 holes. Please feel free to come out an spectate as there will be some great golf being played all day. All matches are expected to be hotly contested and extra holes may be needed in some matches.
Thursday the 20 of June was the normal stableford competition with 20 members taking cards out, The best score of the Day was Andy Varcoe on 35 points from Doug Robbins on 34 points winning on a countback from Bruce Packer also on 34 points. Doug Robbins took the honors in the 9 hole comp with a very solid 21 points. Phil Hunter recovered from his holiday in fine fettle to claim the nearest to pin on the fifth and to also claim the only birdie for the day.
