VARCOE DOMINATES WEEK OF GOLF

10/08/17 – 13/08/17

It’s been another very busy week out at the Millicent golf club last week with the start of the finals of the club championships starting last Sunday. In the A-grade Andy Varcoe got the better of Scott Packer 4/3, Alan Schultz knocked of the reigning champion Terry Chant 1 up, John Reynolds won 3/2 over Hayden Fennell while Phil Thrussell and Ben Golding went down the 20th hole with Thrussell finally getting the win. Next Sunday Varcoe plays Schultz while Reynolds plays Thrussell. In the B-grade Matt Osmond was lucky to get a bye in the first round as Craig Kuiper was a late scratching, Martin Cameron just knocked off club captain Trevor Atkinson on the 19th hole, Andrew Ferguson got the better of Scott Lonergan on the 20th hole and odds on favourite for the title Paul Whitford got knocked off on the 20th hole by young gun Justin Saint. Next Sunday we have Osmond playing Cameron while Ferguson plays Saint in the other final. Only a small field took to the course last Thursday to compete in a stable ford competition played in cool calm conditions it was Craig Kuiper who jumped out of the blocks early to put the pressure on the rest of the field winning the front 9 hole competition with 19 points, Terry Chant was doing all the chasing to grab second spot from Arch Sunderland in a count back with both players finishing with 18 points. On the turn for home, it was Kuiper who held his good form to run away with an easy win finishing with 39 points, as with the front 9, Chant knocked off Sunderland in a count back for second spot as both players finished with 35 points. Kuiper capped off a good day out winning the nearest to the pin on the par 3, 5th hole. The winter sun finally broke through last Saturday as the field took to the course to compete in a stable ford competition and once again it was Andy Varcoe who dominated the day winning the A-grade with 37 points, also the nearest to the pin awards on the 3rd, & 13th holes and the 2nd shot to the 18th green, Varcoe has had a big winter dominating in the cold rainy wintery conditions and is in the best form of his career. Ben Golding finished in a close second finishing with 36 points while Paul Whitford and Alan Schultz had to settle for third with 35 points. In the B-grade it was Geoff Cameron getting up in a count back from the unlucky Mike McRostie winning with 32 points, Scott lonergan was close behind in third spot with 31 points. Nearest to the pin awards went to Varcoe on the 3rd & 13th, Whitford won the 5th hole and “Spike” Warren grabbed the 17th, Trever Atkinson won the closest for 2 shots on the 9th hole while Varcoe won the closest for 2 shots on the 18th green, birdies paid out 2 balls to Martin Cameron and Scott Lonergan while Paul Whitford had a fantastic eagle 2 on the par 4,12th hole playing a driver than pitching wedge to win the eagle’s nest. This week we have another busy week with a stable ford competition on Thursday and Saturday plus the semi-finals of the club championships on Sunday, if you want to watch some good golf get out on Sunday and walk around to support the players still going in the championships.
