It was a good week for the Millicent golf club last week, with fine calm Autumn weather, good numbers turned out and scoring was high which made it very hard to get a podium finish, but a week after the Ladies won their A-grade pennants final, it was the Millicent Millipedes Handicap side that had to step up to the plate last Sunday, playing Lucindale in the grand final at the blue lakes golf course the team had a good win 3/2, Paul Whitford lead the way playing in the number 1 position winning 4/3, followed by Mark Pilmore, winning 3/2, Trevor Atkinson had a good win 4/3. Martin Cameron and Matt Osmond suffered close losses in what was a tight tussle.
Thursday was a stable ford competition played in fine conditions for points towards the Masters trophy, it was Bruce Packer who jumped out of the blocks early to put the pressure on the rest of the field, winning the front 9 hole competition with 20 points. Michael McRostie, Andy Varcoe and Craig Kuiper was doing all the chasing finishing with 19 points, but it was all to no avail as Phil Hunter showed all his class on the Back 9 holes to run all over the field winning with 37 points. Kevin Rainey had to settle with second spot losing a count back to Hunter after finishing with 37 points. Brian Duldig, Packer and Kuiper were all close behind on 36 points. Kuiper capped off a good day winning the nearest to the pin award on the par 3, 5th hole.
Saturday was a fantastic day for golf and with the golf course in pristine condition, good numbers turned out to compete in a stroke round playing for the crown Inn hotel trophy. Tony Bowering set a cracking pace in the A-grade, playing in the first group of the day Bowering won with 78 off the stick to finish with 78-12-nett 66, Scott Packer was close behind in second spot with 78-10-nett 68, while the inform Owen Merrett continued his good form of late to grab third with 75-6-nett 69. In the B-grade it was Andrew Ferguson who had a good day out winning with net 70 from Scott Lonergan in second winning a count back from Robert Thompson with net 72. Nearest to the pin winners for the day saw Alan Schultz on the 3rd hole, Andy Varcoe win the 5th hole, Mark Pilmore claim the 13th hole, Jamie Bellinger win the 17th hole, while Robert Thompson was closest for 3 shots on the 9th hole and Craig Kuiper with the closest for 2 shots on the 18th green. Birdies paid out 1 golf ball each to Bowering, Varcoe, Matt Osmond, John Reynolds and Lonergan.
This Sunday 28/05/17 is the Australian Credit Union Sporting Club 4 ball Ambrose challenge, registration is at 10.30am for an 11am shot gun start, cost is $30 per player or $120 per team including golf and BBQ and lots of great prizes to be won. The June long weekend is the 2nd round of the Millicent, Blackwood, and Loxton tri challenge played in Loxton, while Thursday is a stable ford competition playing for points in the Masters trophy and Saturday is a stroke round playing for the IGA supermarket voucher.
