11/05/17 – 13/05/17 

Autumn has arrived out at the Millicent golf course, even though the mornings last week were very cool, the days were fantastic for golf and some big winning scores came in for the week along with Andy Varcoe bagging a hole in one last Thursday on the par 3, 13th hole and going along with tradition Varcoe brought a round of drinks for all in the Club at the end of the day.

Last Thursday was a stable ford competition for points contributing to the masters trophy and good numbers greeted the starter to play in still calm conditions it was our new member Peter La Jacono who jumped out of the blocks early to easily win the front 9 hole competition with 23 points, John Reynolds and Michael McRostie were doing all the chasing finishing with 19 points while Terry Chant, Brian Duldig and Andy Varcoe were close behind with 18 points. On the Back 9 holes it became the McRostie show as he put on a clinic streeting the field with an impressive 38 off the stick to have 25 points and win the 18 hole competition and the day with 44 points. La Jacono had to settle with second spot with 40 points while “Spike” Warren flew home for third spot with 37 points. Terry Chant played a fine shot into the par 3,5th hole to win the nearest to the pin award while Andy Varcoe won 9 golf balls out of the Eagles nest for his hole in one on the par 3, 13th hole.

Saturday was a stable ford competition played in cool calm conditions and good numbers turned out in all grades as Owen Merrett had a day out to dominate the field winning the A-grade and also the IGA shopping Voucher for the best score of the day finishing with an impressive 40 points. Phil Thrussell got the nod for second spot in a three way count back from Phil Hunter and Andy Varcoe all finishing with 37 points. The B-grade was another tight tussle with Mick Pedler getting the win with a very consistent round of 38 points. Brian Thomson was close behind in second spot with 37 points, while Lyle McGregor finished in third with 35 points. New member Peter La Jacono had a good day out winning the C-grade with 34 points from Herman Vanderhuel winning a count back from Bruce Packer in third as both players finished with 33 points. Nearest to the pin awards went to Alan Schultz on the 3rd, Thrussell won the 5th, Paul Whitford was close on the 13th and Terry Chant won the 17th, Vanderhuel was closest on the 9th green for his third shot for the C-grade while John Reynolds was closest for his second shot on the 18th green for the A & B grades. Nobody managed to make a birdie on the par 3’s for the day.

Sunday 28th May is the South East Sporting Club’s 4 ball Ambrose challenge, open to all sporting and social clubs in the District to get a side together and have a bit of fun and win some great prizes. The June Long weekend is the trip down to Loxton for the second round of the Millicent, Blackwood, Loxton tri challenge, while Thursday is a stable ford competition for the Masters trophy and Saturday is a Stroke round playing for the Crown Inn hotel at Kingston voucher.
