With the final of the previous 12 Monthly medals for the season now over, it was Owen Merrett who came out on top to scoop the pool, winning the final with an impressive 78 off the stick to finish with a net 71 and win the Monthly medallist trophy for the 2016/17 golf season. The new season will kick off on the first Saturday in April.
It was back to winter for the early morning groups last Thursday, with the drop in temperature and howling winds it’s a stark reminder for what is about to come in winter, but that did not stop Herman Vanderhuel having a day out to easily win the day. In the front 9 hole competition it was Scott Packer who got off to the fast start winning in a count back from Ian Todd with 20 points, Vanderhuel grabbed third spot also in a count back from Craig Kuiper with 18 points. On the back 9 holes it turned into the Vanderhuel show as he ran away from the rest of the field easily winning with an impressive 38 points, while it was a three way count back for second and third with Packer, Kuiper getting the nod over Mark Pilmore after the 3 players finished with 34 points. The Nearest to the pin award for the par 3, 5th hole went to Pilmore, playing in the final group of the day.
A large field greeted the starter for the final Monthly medal for the season, and with cool windy conditions in the morning scoring was always going to be a bit tougher until the sun finally came out to make perfect conditions for golf in the afternoon. In the A-grade it was Owen Merrett who never missed a beat to win with an impressive 78-7-71, in a 3 way count back for second and third it was Terry chant getting up with 77-5-72 from Paul Whitford 83-11-72 and the unlucky Greg Cook missing out with 82-10-72. In the B-grade it was Craig Stratford who had a big day out winning his grade and also the Monthly medal with a fantastic score of net 69, Jim Hyland grabbed second spot with a net 73 while Matt Osmond finished in third with a net 74. With the long weekend on this weekend and all roads heading down to Blackwood to start out title defence of the Millicent, Blackwood, Loxton tri series, it will be a bit quiet out at the golf course, but there is a Stable ford competition on today and Saturday for those that will be around the district for the long weekend.
