23/03/17 –  25/03/17

The weather god’s smiled upon us again out at the Millicent golf course last week, with over 40mm of rain falling and sunny days, the course is in fantastic condition also due to all the work our great volunteers do around the course which has helped financially. This Saturday is also the first qualifying round for the club championships.

Only a small field took to the links for the Thursday stable ford competition, played in fine conditions it was Terry Chant who jumped out of the blocks to set the pace, winning the front 9 hole competition with 19 points, it took a three way count back to separate the minor placing’s with Kevin Rainey getting the nod over Alan Schultz and the unlucky Brian Thomson missing out after all players finished on 18 points. On the back 9 holes, Chant kept his good form going to win the day with 36 points, Schultz finished well to grab second with 35 points while Rainey finished in third spot with 34 points. Dave Seymour played a fine shot into the par 3, 5th hole to win the nearest to the pin award.

Fine conditions greeted the field last Saturday as only a small field played in a stable ford competition and it was the inform golfer of the club at the moment Paul Whitford who dominated the A-grade winning with an impressive 38 points, it was a tight tussle for second and third spot with Greg Cook winning a three way count back for second from Craig Kuiper in third and Alan Schultz missing out after all three players finished with 35 points. In the B-grade it was Bruce Packer winning the day with the best score of the week finishing with 39 points from Peter Burchard, Matt Osmond and Herman Vanderhuel all on 33 points. Nearest to the pin winners went to ‘Spike’ Warren on the 3rd,Chris Bailey won the 5th, Burchard on the 13th, the 17th green and 2nd shot to the 9th green were left free while Terry Chant was closest for 2 shots on the 18th green. Birdies payed out 2 balls each to Warren, Scott Packer and Bailey.

This Saturday is the new format for the Qualifying rounds for the club championships which is now played over the next 5 monthly medal days (April through to August) with the 3 best rounds counted, Saturday is a stroke round playing for the monthly medal with a putting competition and Thursday is a stable ford competition, while Friday 14/04/17 is the good Friday Easter 4 ball Ambrose competition.

16/03/17 – 18/03/17

Fantastic weather and great golf scores were the order of the week, where you had to be on top of your game to get a podium finish out at the Millicent golf course this week, Unfortunately the same couldn’t be said for our Pennants teams this week, with player unavailability the sides struggled with the A2 side going down to Mt Gambier 4-1 with Martin Cameron winning his game 1 up, while the handicap side also suffered a loss 3-2 to Penola with Craig Kuiper 3/2 and Mick McRostie 9/7 winning their games.

Good Numbers greeted the starter for the Thursday Stable ford Competition, played in perfect conditions for golf it was the inform Phil Hunter who jumped out of the box to win the front 9 hole competition with an impressive 22 points, Matt Warren took up the challenge to finish in second spot with 21 points while Keith Thrussell did the chasing in third spot with 18 points. Warren put the pedal to the floor on the back 9 holes to run away with an easy win and also shoot the best score of the week finishing with 39 points. Chris Agnew came from behind to grab second finishing with 37 points, while Hunter had to settle for third place with 35 points, Warren capped off a great round of golf winning the nearest to the pin award for the par 3, 5th hole.

The weather could not have been better for last Saturday’s stable ford competition and good numbers took to the course with all the winners coming from the afternoon groups, in the A-grade it was a tight tussle with Greg Cook winning a count back from the much improved Martin Cameron as both players finished with 38 points, third place was also tight as Ben Golding got the nod over Terry Chant in another count back with 37 points. The B-grade was also close as Brian Thomson had a good day out winning with 35 points from Chris Bailey on 33 points and Herman Vanderhuel grabbing third with 32 points. The Ladies also had a close contest as Kathy Sporer won with 31 points from Helen Chilton with 29 points. Nearest to the pin awards saw Cook win the 3rd, Mark Pilmore hit the flag on the 5th, Vanderhuel won the 13th, Chant grabbed the 17th, while Justin Saint won the second shot on the 9th hole and Phil Thrussell won the second shot to the 18th green. Birdies for the day paid out 1 ball each and with calm conditions the birdies flowed with Cook birding the 3rd & 5th holes, Andy Varcoe and Brian Thomson on the 3rd, Ben Young and Matt Warren on the 13th and Phil Thrussell on the 17th hole.

Now is the time to get your teams together for the Good Friday Easter 4 ball Ambrose on Friday 14/04/2017, its great value for $35 per person or $140 per team including a round of golf, BBQ food during the day and then a fish and salad dinner after golf. Competitions for this week are Stable ford rounds for Thursday and Saturday.

09/03/17 – 12/03/17

It was a very successful trip down to Blackwood for the Millicent golf club for the start of the Millicent, Blackwood, Loxton tri series, with 25 men and 2 women making the trip and it was Hayden Fennell who was the star of the show. Played in cold wet windy conditions, Fennell showed all his class with a very impressive 71 off the stick for 45 stable ford, being easily the best round of the day. Alan Schultz, Owen Merrett and Andy Varcoe helped the scoring with 37 points each, Phil Thrussell 34 point, Arch Sunderland 33 points and Greg Cook 32 points rounded out our scoring rounds, while Mary Windsor 34 points and Mardi Sunderland 25 points gave Millicent a total 345 stable ford points to only be 12 points behind the home club of Blackwood and in a fantastic position to defend our title.

Only a small field greeted the starter for last Thursday’s stable ford round and it was Matt Osmond who had a day out to be a runaway winner. On the Front 9 hole competition it was Andrew Ferguson who got off the best start winning with 21 point from his playing partner in Osmond second with 20 points, while Bruce Packer got the nod over Andy Varcoe in third with 19 points. On the back nine holes, Osmond hit his straps to be an easy winner with an impressive 39 points, Bruce Packer got up for second spot in a count back from Ferguson who has to settle for third as both players finished with 37 points. In a win for the club, no player managed to hit the par 3, 5th hole to win the nearest to the pin award.

With many players making the trip down to Blackwood it was only a small field who took to the course to play a stable ford competition, with calm weather good scores were always going to be on the cards, and in the A-grade it was “Spike” Warren who made the most of the conditions to win with 37 points from Phil Hunter in second with 36 points, while Paul Whitford got the nod for third spot over Matt Warren in a count back with 36 points.  Mick Pedler was back to his best form to win the B-grade in a count back from the unlucky Ian Todd with both players finishing on 35 points, third spot went to Geoff Cameron in a three way count back from Chris Bailey and Manny Fuentes all close on 34 points. In the nearest to the pin awards, “Spike” Warren won the 3rd, Martin Cameron got lucky on the 5th, while Pedler was close on the 13th green, he made his birdie putt to be the only birdie for the day winning 4 golf balls, the other trick shot for the day were left free with nobody hitting the 17th green or the second shots to the 9th and 18 greens.

Good numbers turned out for the AGM last Tuesday night with no changes to the committee except to Trevor Atkinson becoming our new Captain, A big thanks from all members goes to the outgoing captain Arch Sunderland for doing a fantastic job. This week we have Stable ford competitions on today and Saturday.
