With the weather being perfect for golf last week, and the golf course in fantastic condition, you had to be at the top of your game to figure in a podium finish as the scores seem to be getting higher each week and Mike McRostie lead the way, hitting top form last Saturday. The Handicap pennants side also got the season off to a flying start, defeating Naracoorte 4-1 at Bordertown last Sunday with good wins to Brian Duldig 2/1, Paul Whitford 3/1, Martin Cameron 2/1 and Mike McRostie 2/1.
Last Thursday was a stable ford competition Playing for the Summer Masters Trophy and it was only a small field greeting the starter but that did not stop Bob Childs from jumping out of the gates early to win the front 9 hole competition with an impressive 22 points, Andy Patterson did all the chasing but he could not catch Childs and he had to settle for second place with 21 points from Ian Todd in third with 20 points. On the back 9 holes, it was Mark Pilmore who came from the clouds to overtake the field winning the day with 41 points, Andy Varcoe grabbed second spot in a three way count back from Todd and Patterson after finishing with 36 points. Craig Kuiper played a fine shot into the par 3, 5th hole to win the nearest to the pin award.
Saturday was a stable ford competition played in fine conditions and good numbers turned out to take on the course in what was going to take a good score to win the choccys, Tony Bowering set the bar very high in the A-grade, playing in the first group of the day, his score of 39 points was too good, President Owen Merrett had a good round in the morning but could only grab second spot finishing with 37 points, while Greg Cook finished in third with 36 points. In the B-grade it was the inform Mike McRostie who had a day out, winning with an impressive 40 points, Herman Vanderhuel also played well finishing in second spot with 39 points, while Ian Todd kept his good form of late going grabbing third with 37 points. In the ladies Competition Kathy Sporer lead the way winning with 35 points from Helen Chilton winning a count back from Mary Windsor with both players finishing with 32 points. Nearest to the pin awards for the day went to Terry Chant on the 3rd, Paul Whitford won the 5th, Chris Bailey hit the 13th, the 17th green was left free, Trevor Atkinson won the 2nd shot to the 9th green while Merrett won the 2nd shot to the 18 green. No player made a birdie on the par three’s.
The Millicent golf club AGM will be held at the Summerset Hotel on Tuesday 7th March at 7.30 pm, if we could get as many members as possible there would be fantastic. The Millicent, Blackwood, Loxton tri challenge is on Sunday 12/03/17 long weekend down at Blackwood, please put your name on the sheet at the bar if you can make the trip. The Good Friday Easter 4 ball Ambrose competition is on 14/04/17 so get your teams together now, Thursday is a stable ford competition playing for the Summer Masters trophy, while Saturday is a stroke round playing for the monthly medal and also a putting competition.
