SE Golf Month Activities

Seven clubs in the South East have registered Golf Month activities in October. With the amount of promotion on local TV and radio by Golf Australia and Golf SA there should be a bit of interest by the public to join in Millicent’s Twilight Golf starting at the end of this month. Members are encouraged to bring a friend along and have a bit of fun out on the course.

It was a big weekend out at the Millicent golf course over the long weekend, with visitors from the Loxton and Blackwood golf clubs down for the final of the tri series between the three clubs made for good numbers in the fields on Saturday and Sunday and a very close finish with Millicent taking out the shield for the tri series, winning with 954 points from Blackwood on 946 points and Loxton in third with 924 points.
Thursday was a stable ford competition and the fourth round of the Masters trophy, played in tough conditions, with the threat of rain and strong winds, it was the old fox, Dave Seymour, who brought his swing with him to jump the field early to win the front 9 hole competition with 22 points. Andy Varcoe got the nod for second spot in a count back from Terry chant who had to settle for third spot as both players finished with 17 points. It was all one way traffic on the back 9 holes as Seymour continued on his merry way, blowing the field away, winning the 18 hole competition and the day with a brilliant score of 40 points. Scott Packer has a great back 9 holes to fly into second spot with 37 points, while Varcoe and Bruce Packer tied for third with 33 points. Nearest to the pin winner on the par 3, 5th hole went to Terry Chant with a fine shot.
Good numbers took to the course for the Saturday stable ford competition as once again the threat of rain and strong winds was going to keep the scoring down, as this did not seem to worry Andy Varcoe as he won the A-grade on a count back with 35 points from Terry Chant who has a brilliant front 9 holes shooting 3 under 33 off the stick, but could not keep it going into the back 9 holes, while Jamie Bellinger got up for third spot with 29 points. The B- grade winner and the best score of the day came from Tod Lillicrap, visiting from Mt Gambier, winning with 37 points from Martin Cameron in second spot with 36 points and Paul Whitford and Peter Burchard tying for third with 35 points. In the C-grade it was Ron Hateley who officially hit 17 trees for the day and mostly finished up in the middle of the fairway, winning with 30 points in a count back from G. Kamm and Robert Thompson in third with 29 points. Nearest to the pin winners for the day saw Craig Kuiper on the 3rd, Bellinger winning the 5th, Burchard very close on the 13th, while Whitford hit the 17th, none of the C-graders could hit the 9th green in three shots, while Lillicrap was closest for 2 shots on the 18th green. Birdies paid out 1 ball each to Burchard, Varcoe, Bellinger and Whitford.
Sunday was the final round of the Millicent, Loxton, Blackwood tri series and with the leader board very close it came down to a home ground advantage as Millicent came from behind to win the shield by 8 stable ford points. With the top 5 men’s scores and the top 5 ladies scores added together over the 3 rounds at all 3 courses, Millicent finished with 954 points to win from Blackwood on 946 points and Loxton on 924. Greg Cook lead the way for Millicent having the best score of the day finishing with 37 points, from Scott lonergan and Ian Greenwood both shooting 36 points, while Mardi Sunderland and Janet Watson shot the best scores for the ladies finishing with 33 points and Kathy Sporer had 30 points.
With the Weather finally looking like improving, it would be nice to start feeling some sun on the back, while walking the fairways as Thursday is a stable ford competition and the first round of the summer Masters Series, while Saturday is a stroke round playing for the monthly medal and also a putting competition.
