Once again the weather dominated the scores out at the Millicent golf course with the promise of lots of heavy rain last Thursday, it did not show up and the day turned out to be a warm calm day which made for good golf. Unfortunately the heavy rain the was forecast for Saturday, did turn up at lunch time and only the morning groups getting through and one group in the afternoon that persisted through the heavy rain to finish their round, as many groups had to pull out.
Thursday was a stable ford competition played in warm calm conditions, but the threat of heavy rain was always in the back of the players’ minds as Keith Thrussell got off to a flying start in the early morning groups to win the front 9 hole competition with a brilliant 22 points from Mark Pilmore in second spot finishing with 20 points and Kevin Rainey grabbed third with 19 points. Pilmore had some lucky breaks on the back 9 holes, to win the 18 hole competition and the day with 40 points, Phil Thrussell had a good back 9 holes to grab second spot with 36 points while spike warren won the count back for third spot from Keith Thrussell with both players finishing with 35 points. Nearest to the pin on the par 3, 5th hole went to Craig Kuiper with a fine shot.
Saturday was a tough day for golf, with the wind blowing and winter back with a vengeance, the morning players defiantly had the best of the conditions as the afternoon turned into a day you did not want to be outside. The weather did not seem to affect Andrew Varcoe as he had a day out to win the A-grade and the day with 36 points from Greg Cook in second spot with 34 points and Matt Warren in third with 31 points, Cook played in the only group in the afternoon to finish their round. Mick Pedler showed all his experience to win the B-grade with a great round of 36 points, winning from Martin Cameron in second spot with 35 points and Andrew Ferguson grabbed third spot with 34 points. Jim Hyland had a good day out to win the C-grade with 34 points, winning from Manny Fuentes on 24 points and Ian Todd grabbed third spot with 23 points. Nearest to the pin winners for the day went to Paul Whitford on the 3rd hole, Greg Cook won the 5th, Scott Packer was very close on the 13th, while Hyland won the 17th hole. No C-grader could get on the 9th green for their 3rd shot, while nobody hit the 18th in 2 shots into the wind. Birdies paid out 1 ball each to Packer, Hyland and Matt Warren. The Weather must have put all the ladies off this week.
This weekend we have all our visitors from Blackwood and Loxton down for the final round of the Tri series, with a warm up on Saturday with a stable ford competition before the AFL grand final and then the main day on Sunday. Dinner is available at the club on Saturday and Sunday night and we need as many players as possible to play on the Sunday. Today is a stable ford competition for the 4th round of the Masters trophy. Good luck to all players and hopefully we can get a bit of nice weather for the long weekend.
