After a few big weeks out at the Millicent Golf course, it was a quiet weekend, as the weather went back to winter on Saturday afternoon and only the morning and mid- morning golfers were lucky enough to finish their rounds, as the weather turned rough a few groups in the late afternoon had to call it off as they got washed off the course.
Thursday was a perfect spring day for golf, nice and warm, even though the wind played havoc in the afternoon and affected a few scores, it was Spike Warren who jumped out of the blocks early to smash the front 9 hole competition, winning with 21 points from Andy Patterson with 18 points and Brian Duldig got up for third spot with 17 points. It was only Warren who kept the good form going into the Back 9 holes as he won the 18 hole competition and the day easily with an impressive 39 points from Duldig who got up into second spot with 34 points, as Warren must have inspired his playing partner in Phil Hunter who finished in third spot with 32 points. Hunter also won the nearest to the pin award for the par 3, 5th hole after a few words of advice from Warren.
Saturday was a stroke round playing for the monthly medal and also a putting competition and it’s fair to say, the early morning golfers defiantly had the best of the conditions, as the afternoon groups got washed out, and as expected all the winners came from the morning groups. Owen Merrett showed all his class to win the A-grade and the monthly medal with the best score of the day in a close contest, Merrett finished with an impressive score of net 69 just beating Phil Hunter who finished with net 70, Alan Schultz got up for third finishing with net 73. In the B-grade it was Scott Lonergan who had a good day out winning with a net 73, from Mark Pilmore in second with a score of net 75 winning a count back from Scott Packer in third also with a net 75. In the C-grade it was a close finish as Manny Fuentes won a count back from Ron Hateley as both players finished with a net 78, Michael McRostie got in for third spot finishing with a net 79. Pam Packer had a good day out winning the Ladies competition with 29 points. Nearest to the pin winners for the day saw Hunter on the 3rd, Schultz won the 5th, Trevor Atkinson was close on the 13th, while Arch Bowman got the nod on the 17th, Hateley was the closest for his third shot on the 9th hole, while nobody could hit the 18th with their second shot. Manny Fuentes was the only player to get a birdie so he wins a few golf balls.
With the local footy finals on at the moment thing get a little bit quiet out at the golf course, but we have the final round of the Millicent, Blackwood, Loxton tournament to be played at Millicent on Sunday the 2nd of October, on the long weekend and the day after the AFL grand final, so we need as many Millicent members as we can get to play. Today is a stable ford round playing for the master’s trophy while Saturday is also a stable ford round, good luck to all players.
