Millicent wins A2 Pennants Golf Flag.

26/5/16 – 28/5/16

A big congratulations to the A2 pennants side winning the grand final last Sunday at Blue Lakes, beating Mt Gambier in a very close match 3/2 with Terry Chant winning the final match on the 20th hole to claim the victory, Greg Cook 3/2 and John Reynolds 5/3 also had good wins while Hayden Fennell and Alan Schultz both went down in close games.
Only a small field took to the course for the Thursday Stableford round for the Masters Trophy in fine conditions, It was Andy Varcoe who had a day out jumping out of the blocks early to win the front 9 hole competition with 19 points from Brian Thompson back for his first round after injury winning a count back with 18 points from Trevor Atkinson also on 18 points, but it was only Varcoe that could continue on the good form to win the 18 hole competition with 39 points from Atkinson on 36 points and Bob Childs in third spot with 35 points. The nearest to the pin winner on the par 3, 5th hole was the inform Terry Chant.
Saturday was a stroke round played for the first day of qualifying for the club championships as 36 players took to the course in fine conditions it was Owen Merrett who got the nod in a count back for the A-grade winning with an 82-10-net 72 from the unlucky Jamie Bellinger finishing with 80-8-net 72 and Greg Cook in third spot with 82-9-net 73. Today is a Stable ford round for the Masters trophy while Saturday is a stroke round for the Monthly Medal also the second qualifying round for the club championships and putting competition. Apparently Chris Agnew had a few problems in the paddock with a runaway Ute the other day, if you see him please ask him how the hammy is going. Good luck.

19/5/16 – 21/5/16

In another tough week for golf, two players stood out head and shoulders above the pack to dominate the competition last week at the Millicent Golf Course. First was the brilliant play from Phil “Meggsy” Hunter winning both the Thursday and Saturday Competitions shooting an impressive 76 and 77 off the stick for 40 points on Thursday and a net 68 on Saturday to win the Crown Inn Trophy. The Second Player, Scott Packer had a hole in One on the par 3, 5th hole and then continued on to shoot a great 81 off the stick to match Hunter with a net 68, congratulations to Scott.
The Weather kept a few players away last Thursday as only a small field took to the course in the wind and rain but that didn’t bother Meggsy Hunter as he easily won the front 9 hole competition with 20 points from Andy Varcoe, Trevor Atkinson and Mick Pedler who all had 16 points. Hunter continued on the good form into the back 9 holes to win the 18 hole competition with 40 points from the fast finishing Varcoe in second with 37 points and Bruce Packer in third finishing with 33 points. Nearest to the pin award for the par 3, 5th hole went to Hunter who had a big day out.
The weather improved for the Saturday golfers although the windy conditions made scoring difficult for some, others found the going easy. Congratulations to Scott Packer for a hole in one and to Phil “Meggsy” Hunter winning the A-grade and the Crown Inn Trophy with a net 68 from Alan Schultz with net 70 and Owen Merrett in third spot with a net 72. Scott Packer continued on after all the excitement to win the B-grade with a net 68 from Geoff Cameron net 72 and Paul Whitford in third with a net 74. Ron Hateley took out the C-grade with a net 70 from Trevor Hutchesson net 76 and Peter Bateman in third finishing with a net 77. In the Ladies it was Pam Packer who won the day with 32 points from Robin Rolfe finishing with 30 points. Nearest to the pin winners saw Peter Burchard on the 3rd, Scott Packer, hole in one on the 5th, Merrett on the 13th, and Scott Packer was very close again on the 17th, Tank Thomson won the 3rd shot on the 9th for the C-grade while Spike Warren hit the 18th hole for 2 shots to knock off Hunter. Birdies payed out 2 balls each to Warren, S.Packer and Jamie Bellinger.
Unfortunately we had mixed results with our pennants sides as the A2 side went down 3/2 in the final round and have finals starting on Sunday but the Handicap side lost their final to be put out of the race, thanks to all who played in the pennants sides and good luck to the A2 side this week. The second round of the Millicent, Blackwood, Loxton tri series is on with a trip down to Loxton on the June Long weekend, also the Club Championships are about to start with 3 qualifying round starting on Saturday with a stroke round, we need as many players as we can get to support the Loxton trip and the club championships as we can get. Good luck to all.

Ladies Championship

Millicent Ladies Golf began their Championship finals 18th May, with Club (Open) and B grade quarter and semi finals being played. The C grade completed the 4th qualifying round of their Championship, which is a stableford event.

Club Championship qualifiers had an easy road to the semi finals with only one quarter final played which was between Helen Chilton and Kirsty Bailey. Kirsty was successful. In the afternoon, top qualifier Lana Barlow defeated Mary Winser to take a spot in the final. Kirsty Bailey then played second qualifier Sue Agnew, and that match concluded with Sue being successful on the 19th hole. Lana and Sue will compete next Wednesday over 36 holes scratch match play, commencing at 8.30am with the final 18 being played after lunch. Referee will be either Helen Chliton or Glenis Skeer.

In the B grade, 8 qualifiers contested the quarter finals, Val Williams (top qualifier) def Rose Hunt (8), Karen Altschwager (2) def Michele Smith (7), Bronwyn Clarke (3) def Julie McKenzie (6), Lyn Watson (5) def Glenis Skeer (4). In the afternoon, semi finals were played Val def Lyn, Bronny def Karen. The B grade final is 36 holes scratch match play between Val and Bronny. Commencing at 8.45am, the referee will be Mary Warneke.

C Grade is a stableford final between the top 2 stableford qualifiers, Marg Baker (87), and Pam Packer (85). Janet Watson will be their referee.

After play, all players and guests will enjoy the customary sherry party come dinner, which combines with our fun theme, which this year is “Choose your Book Title”.

12/5/16 – 14/5/16

Once again it was the golf course and the weather that was the big winners last week out at the Millicent Golf course as only 3 players managed to play to their handicaps out of 46 players, which now has a tally of 8 players out of 98 in the past fortnight to play to their handicap and it only going to get harder as winter is approaching.
Only a small field of 16 players were brave enough to go out and tackle the elements last Thursday as winter came early and it was Craig Kuiper who won the front 9 hole competition on a count back from Graham “Spike” Warren and Craig Sunderland all finishing with 18 points, but it was only Warren who could hold his round together to win the 18 hole competition and the day with 34 points from the fast finishing Bruce Packer also on 34 points and Bob Childs in third spot with 33 points. Craig Sunderland won the Nearest to the pin award on the par 3, 5th hole with a great shot to be close.
Saturday was a much better day for golf apart from the tricky breeze that played havoc with the score card, 30 players took to the course for the Saturday Stable ford round as Brian Duldig was the runaway winner in the A-grade with a great score of 37 points from Craig Kuiper in second spot with 36 points and Ben Golding got the nod in third with 35 points. In the B-grade it was the Bruce Packer show winning with 36 points from a 3 way count back for second and third spot as Dave Seymour, Lyle McGregor and Matt Osmond all finished with 33 points. Ron Hateley took out the C-grade with 34 points from Manny Fuentes 32 points and Trevor Hutchesson in third spot with 31 points. Nearest to the pin awards saw Alan Schultz hit the 3rd, Craig Sunderland on the 5th, “Spike” Warren was very close on the 13th, and Chris Agnew on the 17th hole. Nearest for 3 shots on the 9th hole for the C-grade was Ron Hateley and Greg Cook won the nearest for 2 shots on the 18th hole. Birdies for the day paid out 2 balls each to Schultz, Warren, Agnew and Sunderland. In the ladies competition it was Robin Rolfe who won with 24 points from Pam Packer in second with 21 points.
Both the pennants sides had great wins on Sunday as the A2 side got up 3/2 defeating Mt Gambier with good wins to Terry Chant, Hayden Fennell and Greg Cook and the Handicap side defeating Naracoorte 3/2 with good wins to Martin Cameron, Trevor Atkinson and Bill Mullen’s, with one round to go both sides are now set for finals action. A big Congratulations also must go to John Reynolds who had an Eagle on the par 5, 10th hole on Saturday playing Driver, 5 iron, wedge in the hole for an Eagle 3, well done “JR”. This week we have a Stable ford round for the Masters trophy today and a stroke round for the Crown Inn Hotel Trophy on Saturday, good luck to all players.
