Merritt wins A-Grade

24/03/16 – 26/03/16
It was a big Easter weekend out at the golf club starting last Friday with the Good Friday 4 ball Ambrose competition which was a huge success with 25 teams entered and 100 players out on the course a big thank you must go to all the volunteers who helped make the day run very smooth. Bruce Packer and Mick Pedler did a fantastic job behind the bar, Paul Whitford, Trevor Atkinson and Arch Sunderland organised all the teams and the scores, Paul and Mick cooked a great BBQ all day and Kathy and Helen for organising a top quality fish dinner after golf and also to our fantastic sponsors in Mitre 10 Millicent and Wagner’s Roses for providing the prizes for the winners, thank you very much.
It was only a small field for Thursdays Stable ford competition played in fine conditions which saw Terry Chant continue on with his fantastic form of late to win the front 9 hole competition on a count back from Andy Patterson with 20 points each, but Chant couldn’t hold off the fast finishing Matt Osmond who had an impressive 21 points on the back 9 holes to win the 18 hole competition and the day with 40 points, Chant finished in second with 39 points from Trevor Hutchison in third with 37 points, Osmond also won the nearest to the pin prize on the par 3, 5th hole.
The good Friday 4 ball Ambrose Competition had a fantastic turnout with 25 teams in the field and fine weather meant for very good scoring with the winning team of Ben Gordon, Mike Dedonatis, Zac Walker and Dustin Knaggs shooting 9 under 63 off the stick for a net 53 3/8th to win from the team of Scott lonergan, Martin Cameron, Jeff Crosier and Shane Stevens with 11 under 61 off the stick for a net 53 5/8th. Nearest to the pin winners had Liz Saint close on the 3rd hole for the ladies, Zac Walker on the 5th hole for non- golfers, Martin Cameron got close on the 13th, and Mark Pretty won the 17th hole for all golfers, also a big thank you to our fantastic sponsors in Mitre 10 Millicent and Wagner roses for supplying the prizes for the day.
Saturday’s stable ford competition had good numbers in the field for the Easter long weekend and with the fine weather and golf course in fantastic condition Owen Merritt and Jamie Bellinger made the most of the conditions to win the A- grade with 37 points each, Merritt won the count back and the day from Bellinger and Terry Chant in third with 36 points. Peter Burchard was in great form to win the B-grade with 37 points from Scott lonergan with 35 points and Mark Pilmore in third with 34 points, Herman Vanderhuel continued his good form of late to win the C-grade with 36 points from Brian Cakebread 35 points and Jim Hyland in third with 33 points. Nearest to the pin winners had Bellinger close on the 3rd, Burchard on the 5th, Alan Schultz was close on the 13th, and nobody hit the 17th, also no birdies for the day.

The weather gods smiled on the golf course again as the heavens opened up with a large downpour last week then turned on perfect weather for golf on the weekend. It was great to see the course in fantastic condition for the visit from the Minister for Recreation and Sport the Hon Mr Leon Bignall who joined in the Field for last Saturdays Par round, from all Reports Mr Bignall really enjoyed the course and had a good round.

Only a small field took to the links in perfect golf weather for Thursdays stable ford competition as good scores came in from both the morning and afternoon groups. Mick Pedler got out of the blocks early to win the 9 hole competition with a brilliant 22 points from Bob Childs on 20 points and Ian Todd in third spot with 19 points but none could match Robert “Tank” Thompson who won the 18 hole competition and the day with 23 points on the back 9 holes to finish with 41 points beating the unlucky Todd on a count back. Mick Pedler held on for third with 39 points. Nearest to the pin on the par 3, 5th hole went to Craig Kuiper.

Saturdays Par round was played in fine conditions and good numbers made up the field but no one could keep up with Mark Pretty as he had a great day out winning the A-grade with +4, Craig Sunderland finished in second with + 2, from Matt Warren and Greg Cook, +1. Paul Whitford took out the B-grade on a 3 way count back from Martin Cameron and Trevor Atkinson all with + 3, Herman Vanderhuel continued his good form to win the C-grade with +3 from Phil McQueen +2 and Michael McRostie -1.Nearest to the pin winners went to Matt Warren on the 3rd, Trevor Atkinson 5th,Whitford 13th and no one hit the 17th, birdies payed out 3 balls to Warren and Atkinson.
