From the Bunker Edition of Thursday 2nd July2015 SE Times
A perfect winter’s morning greeted the finalists of the Thompson’s Drilling Club and Grade Championships for the Millicent Golf Club conducted last Sunday. A larger than expected gallery was present to watch the matches and this was most welcome by the finalists. A big thank you must go to Colin and his volunteers for having the course in great condition for this event.
Chant Crowned Club Champion
The club championship for season 2015/2016 was contested by Terry Chant and Ben Golding and it was Golding’s first appearance in the final of the championship as Chant is a previous finalist and Club Champion. Chant got away to the better start of this match and his consistent ball striking was on display as he held a 3 hole lead heading into the lunch break. Golding came out after the lunch break with all engines roaring to halve some crucial holes but it was Chant who was too strong in the end to claim yet another Club Championship 6 and 5. Chant also claimed the senior’s title for season 2015/2016 by having the lowest gross score in the qualifying rounds.
B Grade Championship-Back to Back Packer
The B grade championship was contested between Scott Packer, number five qualifier and last year’s B Grade Champion and the Club Captain Paul Whitford, number three qualifier. Whitford got off to the better start being two up after four holes but Packer rallied back with his great chipping and putting skills on display to level the match at the halfway mark. Packer’s putting put Whitford under a lot of pressure throughout the day and Whitford couldn’t handle this and Packer went onto claim his second consecutive B Grade Championship 4 and 2. This match drew a great gallery with the match being very even with good golf on display throughout the contest and the participants grew confidence from the gallery.
C Grade Championship-Tilley’s Triumphant Victory
Glen Tilley and Manny Fuentes contested this final after both players showed impressive form to secure their spot in this final. Tilley was gunning for his second Club championship some 12 years apart after winning the C Grade Championship in 2003, whilst for Fuentes this was his first final’s appearance. Tilley got away to a very quick start being 4 up after seven holes and Fuentes never recovered from this as Tilley went on to clinch the final 9 & 7.
A big thank you must go to the umpires/referees Greg Cook, Graham Warren and Scott Lonergan for adjudicating the Club Championship, B Grade and C Grade matches respectfully and Mick Pedler for managing the bar during the day. Many thanks must also go to Thompson Drilling, the major sponsor of the club championship and this event would not be able to run so successfully without their generous support. It was also a very pleasant surprise to see so many spectators watching the high quality final matches and to see many people in the clubhouse for the presentations.
